🚢 Sunken Barge Removal Begins

Source: ecoRI News

After eight years, the long-standing crane barge in the Providence River is finally being removed. This week, divers and contractors began work to lift the 114-foot vessel, which sank during a 2017 storm, from the riverbed. The $1.5M project is funded by a NOAA grant through the Inflation Reduction Act. Once removed, parts of the barge will be repurposed into public art by The Steel Yard, beautifying the waterfront. This project addresses environmental concerns while creating a unique artistic legacy for Providence. With safety and environmental measures in place, this marks a major improvement for the city’s riverfront.

🎓 JWU Offers Tuition Pledge

Source: Johnson & Wales University

Johnson & Wales University is introducing "The JWU Pledge," a program designed to make college more affordable for students. Families earning up to $80,000 annually can qualify for full tuition coverage, while those earning less than $200,000 can have 60% of tuition costs covered. With tuition currently at $41,782 annually, this pledge represents a significant financial relief for many. JWU is also offering a three-year degree option, allowing students to save on tuition and jump into careers sooner. These initiatives aim to support families, boost access to higher education, and position JWU as a competitive choice in Providence.

McKee also emphasized programs to raise per-capita income by $20,000 by 2030, including funding for work-based learning and career training.
