Coastal Cafe Chronicles

Where I Tried: Dave’s Coffee (341 S Main St, Providence, RI 02903)

What I ordered: Small iced mocha with almond milk + apple cider donut

What it cost: $11.66

I went to Dave’s on a weekday morning and had no trouble parking. The inside is pretty cool with stools along the window, a long table, and somewhat of a nook in the back. The price was comparable to most spots I’ve highlighted so far. It seems like the mid $11 range is pretty common for a small iced mocha and a pastry, although I have also highlighted multiple spots that cost less. My mocha was great. The apple cider donut was gluten-free. I don’t avoid gluten, it was just the only option they had. I really enjoyed the donut. It was almost closer to an apple cider cake than a donut, but it wasn’t too heavy. Random, but they also have sick trucker hats. I might have to go back and get one. I definitely recommend Dave’s!

🎭 Columbus Theatre Bought by Comedy Connection

The Columbus Theatre in Providence, which had announced its closure in May after 60 years under the Berberian family, has new owners. Cory Brailsford and David Fiorillo, the team behind Comedy Connection and Black Duck Tavern, have acquired the theatre. They plan to restore its original name, Uptown Theatre, and renovate it before reopening. The new owners aim to preserve the venue's historic charm while introducing fresh programming. Once the renovations are complete, the Uptown Theatre will join Comedy Connection in offering entertainment to the community.

Look - I know this isn’t in Providence, it’s in Pawtucket. But for some reason when you search “Providence, RI” on Zillow it pops up. There were no “most expensive condos in Providence” or anything like that today so I thought this was fair game to include. I have a fun question to ask about this. If you were given this school and an unlimited budget, what would you do with it? Only two rules - no apartments and no schools, that’s too easy. Here’s my answer: A mall for small businesses. A school is somewhat similar to a mall format (right?) You have hallways with rooms off them, public bathrooms, stairs, an elevator, and a big parking lot. Each classroom could be a retail space. It would be a cheaper alternative to Providence Place Mall for local businesses. Now who has the $8,000,000 required to buy this thing and make a mall with me?
