🌱 Growing Food, Growing Community

Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) has transformed neglected lots across Providence into 58 thriving community gardens, producing over 67,000 pounds of food in 2023 for more than 23,000 residents. With decades of support from the City Council, these gardens provide culturally familiar food, hands-on learning for youth, and solutions to urban flooding.

Recent projects include a $45,000 improvement on Potters Avenue and tax-exempt status for SCLT’s Broad Street development. Advocates like Councilwoman Mary Kay Harris and Councilor Miguel Sanchez ensure SCLT’s mission thrives with long-term leases and funding.

✈️ T.F. Green Expands Destinations

Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport continues to grow, becoming New England's fastest-growing airport in 2024 with nearly 4 million passengers served. Seven new nonstop routes launched this year, including San Diego and San Juan, Puerto Rico, thanks to Breeze Airways' expanded operations.

Looking ahead, 2025 will bring three new direct flights to Daytona Beach, Wilmington, and Nashville. Breeze Airways plans to grow its nonstop destinations at T.F. Green to 35 in the coming years, with 19 already available. Travelers now have over 30 nonstop options, from warm Florida getaways to bustling cities like Los Angeles and Chicago.

🏥 Miriam Hospital Gets $125M Makeover

The R.I. Department of Health has approved Brown University Health’s $125 million renovation plan for The Miriam Hospital. This three-year project will modernize the hospital, starting in 2025 with the demolition of its oldest building to make way for a new emergency department and private patient rooms. The updated ER aims to improve efficiency, reduce wait times, and enhance geriatric care. Miriam President Maria Ducharme emphasized the importance of these upgrades to meet modern healthcare demands and better serve the community. Construction is set to finish by 2027, funded largely by a centennial capital campaign.
