Why Does Only Rhode Island Celebrate Victory Day?

A brief history of Victory Day in the Ocean State

Good morning đź‘‹ ,

For those of you working today, I hope it’s an easy day, and for those with the day off, I hope you are relaxing more than me. I’m up at 6am going to Walmart because I forgot to buy food for my cat last night. The things we do for our pets…

Anyway, to match the theme of a holiday and a day off work, I made this a quick and easy read.

I hope you enjoy it.

Coastal Cafe Chronicles

While writing this, I was away from Providence, so I couldn’t try a new local cafe to review.

Check back for Friday’s edition where I will review a local cafe. If you have any suggestions feel free to reply to this email with them and I will check it out.

Any suggestions in Providence are welcome, especially good iced mochas.

“Victory Day — Aug. 14, 1945 — boys celebrate World War II’s end on Main Street in Pawtucket.”

Victory Day

Today is Victory Day. At least in Rhode Island, it is. Out of all 50 states in the United States, Rhode Island is the only one celebrating Victory Day today. Believe it or not, Rhode Island and Arkansas are the only two states that have ever celebrated Victory Day (Arkansas stopped in 1975). Victory Day refers to the end of WWII and the victory over Japan. More than one in ten Rhode Islanders served in the war and 2,340 were killed.

Rhode Islanders have gone back and forth on Victory Day. Some believe the name should be changed to “Peace and Remembrance Day”, while others believe making that name change would be disrespectful to the veterans who served. Jennifer Stewart, a Democratic state lawmaker tried to pass a bill this year that would rename the holiday, but it failed.

Regardless of where you fall on this, I’m sure we can all agree on two things.

  1. Monday’s suck and it’s nice to have a day off (for those of us who do).

  2. We probably all put our trashcans out last night, forgetting they wouldn’t be picked up this morning.

That is all for our stories today. Not much happened over the weekend. Check out our small business news section Coastline Commerce lower in the newsletter to read some more interesting stories coming out of Providence.
